On the Death of Shaima Alawadi  : Information Clearing House

On the Death of Shaima Alawadi  : Information Clearing House: March 26, 2012 "Antiwar" -- It sickens me to write this, to report on the latest manifestation of the hate that has enveloped my country and spread out across the world like a giant oil spill, but the death of Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old Iraqi woman and mother of five, is a moral obscenity – a crime for which the War Party must take responsibility.

On Wednesday, in the quiet San Diego suburb of El Cajon, California, the teenage daughter of Shaima Alawadi returned home to find her mother drowning in a pool of blood. There were signs of forced entry at the back of the house. Someone had broken in and beaten her mother nearly to death with a tire iron.

One Of Britain's Most Tenacious Pugilists Returns To Parliament : The Two-Way : NPR

One Of Britain's Most Tenacious Pugilists Returns To Parliament : The Two-Way : NPR: Conclusions will be difficult, as it is hard to determine the role played by Galloway's personal attributes. He is a formidable campaigner, a combative, charismatic Scot who can devastate his opponents in an argument, as a U.S. Senate committee found out when it summoned Galloway to discuss allegations — that he has always denied, and have never been proven — about receiving kickbacks from the U.N.'s Oil for Food Program in Iraq during the Saddam era. Galloway turned the tables on senators with a scathing indictment of U.S. policy in Iraq, delivered flawlessly and without notes.

A clinic’s landlord turns the tables on anti-abortion protesters - The Washington Post: In last year’s report “Failing its Families,” Human Rights Watch wrote that at least 178 countries have national laws guaranteeing paid maternity leave. The exceptions include Swaziland, Papua New Guinea and the good ole United States of America.

The Massacre of the Afghan 17 and the Obama Cover-Up   : Information Clearing House: When the implausibility first ‘official’ story became embarrassingly evident to the most superficial observer, the Obama ‘cover-up’ crew released a new version on March 26: According to the revised version of events, the lone, deranged Sgt. Bales committed the first massacre in the early morning hours of March 11, walked back to base for breakfast and lunch and then walked out again to a second village for another round of mass murder – before returning and turning himself in to his commander posing for the video.

Jailed Climate Hero Tim DeChristopher Thrown in the Hole | Jeff Goodell | Politics News | Rolling Stone

Jailed Climate Hero Tim DeChristopher Thrown in the Hole | Jeff Goodell | Politics News | Rolling Stone: If you don’t know the backstory to DeChristopher’s imprisonment, you can read about it here. (Short version: He was sentenced to two years in prison last July for having nonviolently disrupted a federal auction of oil and gas leases in 2008.) This case was a sham before it took this latest turn. If there were any justice in the world, DeChristopher would have been pardoned before he ever set foot in jail. The fact that it is now possible he will serve out the rest of his sentence in a tiny cell with only one break a week to go outside is an outrage, and one that should have everyone who cares about justice and the abuse of political power in America marching in the streets.

Accountability for U.S. Torture — But in Poland

Accountability for U.S. Torture — But in Poland: "This is an important and welcome development. Every state that has signed the Convention Against Torture has an obligation not just to prevent torture but to hold accountable officials who authorize or facilitate it. As a signatory to the Convention, the United States has this obligation, too. By shirking this obligation, we undermine our ability to promote human rights abroad and erode the rule of law here at home."

Why Do So Many Believers Think Atheists Are Worse Than Rapists? - Reason Magazine

Why Do So Many Believers Think Atheists Are Worse Than Rapists? - Reason Magazine: The rally was advertised as the largest ever gathering of atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, and other assorted faithless folks. The relatively young crowd was treated to talks, rants, and routines by such faithless luminaries as biologist Richard Dawkins, American Atheists president David Silverman, professional skeptics Michael Shermer and James Randi, mythbuster Adam Savage, profane musician Tim Minchin, and (via video) comedian Penn Jillette. Off to the side was a small collection of Christian counterprotesters (including members of the truly awful Westboro Baptist Church) who assured the assembled nonbelievers that Christianity’s loving God would consign them all to everlasting fiery damnation unless they changed their wicked ways.

OpEdNews - Article: Empires Then and Now

OpEdNews - Article: Empires Then and Now: The answer is that Washington's empire extracts resources from the American people for the benefit of the few powerful interest groups that rule America. The military-security complex, Wall Street, agri-business and the Israel Lobby use the government to extract resources from Americans to serve their profits and power. The US Constitution has been extracted in the interests of the Security State, and Americans' incomes have been redirected to the pockets of the 1 percent. That is how the American Empire functions.

The Daily Pennsylvanian :: Political commentator Glenn Greenwald disapproves of U.S. war policies: Jerry Paloma never paid attention to politics — until the 2009 Honduran coup d’etat.

“I just didn’t understand why things like that happened. Ever since then I’ve been looking into everything.”

For this reason, Paloma drove 200 miles from Connecticut to listen to political commentator Glenn Greenwald speak on the “Endless War and the Erosion of Civil Liberties in the Age of Terrorism” on Thursday night.

What NPR means by “reporting” - Salon.com

What NPR means by “reporting” - Salon.com: There’s one prime reason why Americans are so uninformed about what their government does in their name around the world (Why do they hate us?). It’s because “news stories” from “even liberal media outlets” like NPR systematically obscure those facts, disseminating pure propaganda from America’s National Security State masquerading as high-minded, Serious news.

CNN Pushing Alarmist Tales of Hezbollah Sleeper Agents | FAIR Blog

CNN Pushing Alarmist Tales of Hezbollah Sleeper Agents | FAIR Blog: Reporting on allegations that link an official enemy state currently under threat of military attack to vague terrorist plots should be extraordinarily cautious. When such charges suggest without evidence that there are "thousands" of terrorist agents living among us "ready and willing to attack"–implying that we are all in grave danger from our ethnically or religiously suspect neighbors–journalists need to be even more skeptical. CNN is taking the opposite approach: breathlessly reporting the most terrifying scenarios, while occasionally noting that there's nothing to substantiate these speculations.

Chris Hedges: The Polite Conference Rooms Where Liberties Are Saved and Lost - Chris Hedges' Columns - Truthdig: I spent four hours in a third-floor conference room at 86 Chambers St. in Manhattan on Friday as I underwent a government deposition. Benjamin H. Torrance, an assistant U.S. attorney, carried out the questioning as part of the government’s effort to decide whether it will challenge my standing as a plaintiff in the lawsuit I have brought with others against President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta over the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), also known as the Homeland Battlefield Bill.

Obama takes Bush’s secrecy games one step further - Salon.com-Glenn Greenwald

Obama takes Bush’s secrecy games one step further - Salon.com: What makes this so appalling is not merely that the Obama administration demands the right to kill whomever it wants without having to account to anyone for its actions, choices or even claimed legal authorities, though that’s obviously bad enough (as I wrote when the ACLU lawsuit was commenced: “from a certain perspective, there’s really only one point worth making about all of this: if you think about it, it is warped beyond belief that the ACLU has to sue the U.S. Government in order to force it to disclose its claimed legal and factual bases for assassinating U.S. citizens without charges, trial or due process of any kind”). What makes it so much worse is how blatantly, insultingly false is its claim that it cannot confirm or deny the CIA drone program without damaging national security.

Totalitarian Systems Always Begin by Rewriting the Law- Chris Hedges

Totalitarian Systems Always Begin by Rewriting the Law: Those of us who reach out to groups opposed to the U.S. in order to explain them to the American public will not be differentiated from terrorists under this law. I know how vicious the government can be when it feels challenged by the press. I covered the wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua from 1983 to 1988. Press members who reported on the massacres and atrocities committed by the Salvadoran military, as well as atrocities committed by the U.S.-backed Contra forces in Nicaragua, were repeatedly denounced by senior officials in the Reagan administration as fellow travelers and supporters of El Salvador's Farabundo Marti National Liberation (FMLN) rebels or the leftist Sandinista government in Managua, Nicaragua.

The pilots’ union, which could have shut down the entire industry, kept on working, unwilling to move out of professionalism and longstanding tensions with the controllers, exacerbated by the inconveniences PATCO had caused with its sickouts and slowdowns. Even a firebrand like the International Association of Machinists’ William Winpisinger, who could have called out the machinists and paralyzed much of air travel, would not act without the pilots. As a result, PATCO faced the federal government without reinforcements. The strike, in preparation for years, seemed to end almost before it began.

Bahrain Medics Show Trial: This Is Not Syria, Therefore No Western Outcry

Bahrain Medics Show Trial: This Is Not Syria, Therefore No Western Outcry: The oil wealth of the tiny island has lined the pockets of the Al Khalifas, but for the ordinary Shia it has brought poverty, pollution and sickness. To add insult to injury, when the mainly Shia-led uprising last February peacefully demanded elected government to replace the unelected venal family dynasty, it was met with batons, bullets and brutality, with thousands incarcerated or fired from their jobs, several tortured to death while in prison.
